I just realised that I am in FOUR! Hi5, Tagged, Facebook and recently Netlog. I didn't want to be in so many, just about 2 but now I don't want to delete my account from ANY!

Totally agree,from what I've seen and heard social conditions in parts of the u.s.,are similiar to a lot of third world countries.We dont always realise how lucky we are in Western Europe.
As a Canadian, I feel very secure about my health care. When I was very ill 2 1/2 years ago I never had to worry about how expensive my hospital treatment was going to be...I was never questioned as to whether I could afford to be admitted to the hospital..not that I could have given them a coherent answer...

I don't really know if Americans turn to myth-based beliefs because of that. But I suspect that you are onto something, I suspect that it is true.

I know that the Canadian system has flaws...but I also know that the previous opinions that stated that they would look after themselves in a health crisis (through a higher power or whatever) are a little mistaken in the Canadian system. In the end I paid for my medical coverage (higher taxes, etc)..through a sort of enforced savings plan. The plan assured that I would have quality care. It's like paying an insurance premium.

The idea is that you sell a product and then 'recruit' poeple to sell it, and take a cut of their profit. They then recruit people to see for them and take a cut of THEIR profit, you getting profit from EVERYBODY now. In theory in a few years you can kick back and let everyone make money for you.

Nice idea in theory, but you have to have a damn good product, and be in it from the very beginning.

If someone is trying to 'recruit' you, I'd recommend you run in the opposite direction.

I prefer facebook because it definitely seems to be the most mature one out there on the internet. Not sure if that's what you're looking for in a network, but I can barely stand the ignorance of a lot of the people on networks like YouTube.

I'd say you should probably choose from one of the more popular ones though, because if there's not a lot of people you know on the site, then there's not really much networking going on.

I'm not sure that employers do actually check social networking sites. I'm an in-house recruiter for a large, multinational company, and I can honestly tell you that I've never looked up a potential employee on a social networking site.

Also, I think your comment is a bit outdated. When Facebook suddenly rose in popularity over a year ago, this point was reported in all the papers so job seekers became aware that if they were looking for a job, they should either set their profiles so that only their friends could view it, or they should remove this kind of stuff until they'd actually found a job.

However, if I was to look up a potential new employee and see photos of the type you describe, I'm not sure that it would bother me anyway. The positive aspect is that it shows that the person has a life outside of work and is not a workaholic. Plus, all of these things were done in their free time and are not work-related - it's not like they were skiving off work to attend a concert.

I have to disagree with the previous poster. As a mom of three, I enjoy several online hangouts including Gentle Christian Mothers, Internet Based Moms, Work it Mom %26amp; PoshMama.

The sites and forums may not be as active as sites aimed at other demographics, but it doesn't mean that they aren't out there or that no one has time to go to them.

This is a somewhat off topic answer, but I read just yesterday in the Wall Street Journal who social networks (on-line) that are aimed at the truly wealthy aren't taking off because people in that world simply don't have the time to be on line.

I suspect the same case can be made for Mom's who are busy. From my observation of my friends who are raising children, it appears they don't have much free time at all.

i'm in College and you know, everytime we go to party, or gathering, everyone smokes and drinks. Now i dont want to do it anymore. At the moment it might be ok, but after a time you'll get addicted, and wont care anymore.

So what are the tips to still keeping the friends and social network without having to smoke and drink...

I think people are forgetting that you're asking what to do in a specific situation - in this case, when out with your drinking/smoking friends, and/or at a party.

For people that I've known who have quit drinking, they say some of the easiest ways are to have non-alcoholic beer (even bring your own bottle/case, if need be), or have sodas instead. If it isn't doing it for you, you could begin by lessening the quantity of the alcohol by mixing it with non-alcoholic drinks. Adding ice also helps, as it gives you less drink, and slowly helps to water your drink down (something you need if drinking alcohol anyway).

As for smoking, it can be tough. Since it sounds like you're more a social smoker, try gum instead. Otherwise, as you know, there are patches that you can try (if one doesn't work for you, there are other brands) and even ciggerettes that are designed to help you quit - which, in your case, would still give you the appearance of being a smoker, if that is something you want.

You can learn a lot about what a person is REALLY like by looking at their account on My Space or other similar sites. More and more HRs are using "non-conventional" means to get in depth info on prosective employees.

I personally don't have any concrete evidence but like many others, I have often heard, read and watched newscasts conveying evidence that this is happening. The last program I saw involved the ethics of such practices including the potential liability and litigation associated with the invasion of privacy surrounding the whole issue. It appears that it'll take a while for this to be ironed out in terms of acceptable practices.
I don't know about HR, but I've worked at companies where managers interviewing potential new hires check out anything from LinkedIn to MySpace before hiring. It seems to be more common for entry-level hires because experience or other people's recommendations matter more for upper level hires.

I'd say you should probably choose from one of the more popular ones though, because if there's not a lot of people you know on the site, then there's not really much networking going on.

Hi, can you please tell me of any good books or articles on social capital, and its many network mechanisms, such as structural holes and structural embeddedness etc...

I need to write a conceptual article on social capital, as part of my social networks module at uni, and I can't find any books on social capital.

Harvard has a blog that mentions several recent books and papers.

Anything concerning "social capital" has to be recent, it seems to be a concept born of the "cyber-era", though not necessarily a creature of cyberspace alone.

It's called the "Complexity and Social Networks Blog". I never thought such a thing would exist, but if you are interested in eventually completing a PhD, this looks a wide open field where you won't likely be forced to reguritate something proposed by your advisor. There really aren't a lot of published papers.

Better yet, corporations are paying for this type of research, and if properly done, it can save them money over existing efforts -

at least according to what I could quickly glean from the blog above.

There is also the INSNA (International Network of Social Network Analysts) , and some of their work might help you understand the mechanisms of behavior in Yahoo! Answers:

I like it and find the upgrade more people friendly. Its easier for those using Y!A to obtain friendships and camaraderie. What I don't like is the fact that it just gave stalkers a whole new and easy way to do their dirty work.

With MMORPGS currently on a huge upward trend throughout all age categories, and many of these games becoming highly addictive, people are beginning to spend more and more time immersing themselves into these virtual worlds.

With some of these games, in specific World of Warcraft having a very social network involved. Do you feel that these games could possibly have a positive Social impact?

I am an avid gamer of World of Warcraft, but I am also 22 years old, maintain an excellent fulltime job, and have an outside social life.

I am primarily interested in the impact of people who fully immerse themselves in the game, and maintain a decent social interaction ingame.

MMORPGs have the same impacts as any society. It really is a society. Folks can get destructively addicted and let their RL connections fall away in favor of the games connections. You see the same thing happen with groups of friends, with clubs/organizations. So the most common problem is for one member in a couple to get hooked deeply in the game and the other to feel neglected. Many a relationship went down the sink because of gaming, not just MMORPGs.

It can also have postitive impacts. Many people, not only young learn a great deal of social interaction skills from participation in such a society. It can build confidence and depending on the game enhance the ability of a person to work in a team, stratigize, prioritize and especially leaders in such society learn or sharpen leadership skills. Many MMORPs also help develop negotiation skills. So there are quite a few valuable skills that can be learned or sharpened thorugh MMORPGs. Most people that play them do so and enjoy the experience. Some like KOC can be so time draining to be successful at that it interferes with life to be a top player. Others can be played part time and time invested generally is not as relivant to the level of success.

As added impacts. A number of romantic relationships that carried into RL relationships have developed between people meeting in MMORPGs. Friendships, sometimes even with people local to you that you never would have met if not for the MMORPG. I've heard of job opportunities, allies rooming with each other or providing other such goods and services for their fellows in need. Help finding work and a host of other functions that any society should play for it's members. So MMORPGs do touch the RL for some people. Both positive and negitive.

I think its more the cost on time. However I have friends from all over the world from wasting time on games. My friend is going to norway this week to meet someone he met playing WoW. He came over here (to UK) last october and lots of fun was had by all.

This Generation could lead us further to more international understanding if we have links all over the world, or could not.
my sister is 14 years old. she plays a game called "maplestory." i dont get whats so popular with the games.anyway, she failed so many classes, been cutting class, lying to her friends/family/me. she has lost the trust that i entrusted in her.
as a 33 soon to be 34 year old player of Endless Online which is very similar to World of Warcraft and in the same boat as you ( i hold down a full time job as a social advocate for homeless and poor with most of my clients being special needs people and maintaining a decent social life playing in real life pool leagues and mixed martial arts tournaments and hanging with friends on weekends)

i find there are positive aspects of MMORPGS like i not only chat on Endless Online but maintain close friendships globally and potential business contacts later on in the game where I would normally not make such encounters across the planet or have the opportunity to do so (my best friends who also play the game are in poland. russia, canada and the dominican republic)

so that is the positive aspects i can see from the rise in popularity of MMORPGS

since chat rooms are a dying artform due to pedophilia, bots, virus code booters and spammers I believe MMORPGS are the next popular evolution of that sort of chat rooms taken to the next level and should also be applauded for taking that next courageous step
