Do you think social networks and similar sites sell their member databases?

...like in a sort of underground mafioso style to other sites and spam artists for a bit of extra cash? Cos I'm getting tons of spam on an e-mail account which I aint signed up to anything else on other than yahoo, msn, or facebook.

Facebook was revealed recently to sell all the information it gathers on its site. Wether that be post codes pictures you name it. If its on there site its for sale.

Facebook servers are based in the USA so do not come under european data collection laws.

dunno but ive had heaps of spam since registering on them but if they did they'd loose ppl respect
i would imagine no, as it is against the law, the data protection act would be a great concern to these people, messing with peoples personal information
Read their privacy policies, if they haven't got a privacy policy then the answer to your question is probably yes, but any reputable website has to have a privacy policy which states that names, addresses etc will not be sold on or divulged to third parties.
It's possible, but unlikely - check the terms and conditions you agreed to when you signed up - you did read them didn't you?

It's probably because people use software to trawl sites such as social networking sites and bbs's to search and extract email addresses. So for example if you've entered your email address on a forum it'll of been picked up there.
